In 1955, The Penguins scored their first hit with Earth Angel. The song was written by Jesse Belvin, Gaynel Hodge, and Curtis Williams. It quickly climbed Billboard's charts ending up in the Number Eight slot.
Later in 1955, the Crew-Cuts released their version of the song and watched it climb the charts to Number 3. Gloria Mann's version, also that year, rose to Number 18.
The song continued to be recorded by various artists including Johnny Tillotson in 1960, The Vogues in 1969, and the New Edition in 1986. While every version made it into the top 100 on Billboard's charts, the most popular and most requested version continues to be by The Penguins.
The Lyrics:
(oh, oh, oh, oh, wah-ah-ah)
Earth angel, earth angel
Will you be mine?
My darling dear
Love you all the time
I'm just a fool
A fool in love with you
Earth angel, earth angel
The one I adore
Love you forever and ever more
I'm just a fool
A fool in love with you
I fell for you and I knew
The vision of your love-loveliness
I hoped and I prayed that someday
I'll be the vision of your hap-happiness oh, oh, oh, OH!
Earth angel, earth angel
Please be mine
My darling dear
Love you all the time
I'm just a fool
A fool in love with you-ou-ou
I fell for you and I knew
The vision of your loveliness
I hope and pray that someday
That I'll be the vision of your happiness
(oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh , oh)
Earth angel, earth angel
Please be mine
My darling dear
Love you all the time
I'm just a fool
A fool in love with you-ou (you, you, you)
