Welcome to Retroville! It's 1953! | |||||||||||||||
The Academy Award winning film for best picture was From Here to Eternity. This dramatic romance film takes place in 1941 in Hawaii. A young Army man is transferred to the base and his captain, after hearing about his boxing prowess, pressures him to represent the company on the boxing team. The young man insists he doesn't box anymore, so the captain sets about making him regret that decision. While all that is going on, a Sergeant begins wooing the Captain's wife, a woman with a history of illicit affairs amidst her husband's command. And if all that isn't enough to keep you on the edge of your seat, the young former boxer begins falling in love with a social club employee. Of course, all of this drama, romance, and intrigue takes place as the Japanese invasion of Pearl Harbor looms on the horizon. It is interesting to note that the movie, and Frank Sinatra's role in it, were eluded to without great subterfuge in Mario Puzo's The Godfather. Of course, the director of From Here to Eternity, Mr. Fred Zinnemann, never awoke to find a severed horse head in his bed. Regardless, everyone who has seen the movies or read the book picked up on the reference to the film and the young Italian actor given the chance to play a lead role. |
