A romantic thriller about a shy ladies companion staying in Monte Carlo with her stuffy employer. She meets the wealthy Maxim deWinter. Max is troubled by the death of his wife, Rebecca, in a boating accident the year before. She and Max fall in love, get married, and return to his country estate in Cornwall. After meeting Mrs. Danvers, Max's housekeeper, the new Mrs. deWinter finds that Rebecca still has a hold on everything, including her husband.
