Welcome to Retroville! It's 1940!
NBC has been a pioneer in both radio and television.  In 1940, NBC made the news by broadcasting the first commercial television program. According to NBC's corporate website, the following is a brief glimpse at the history of NBC:

"An industry pioneer for more than 75 years, the National Broadcasting Company was founded in 1926 by General Electric, RCA, and Westinghouse. RCA became the sole owner of NBC in 1932. In 1986, RCA was purchased by General Electric, which today wholly owns and operates NBC.

Starting off as a radio network in the 1920s, NBC evolved into a television broadcaster in the 1940s. Today, NBC is a diverse, international media company. In addition to the NBC Television Network and the NBC Television Stations Division, the company owns CNBC, which is the global leader in business news, reaching 175 million homes worldwide. In April 2002, NBC purchased Telemundo, the second-largest U.S. Spanish-language television network, and in December 2002, the company added the Bravo cable network to its portfolio. In partnership with Microsoft, NBC operates MSNBC, which is a leading cable-news channel and the world's preeminent news site on the Internet.

NBC's operations include additional investment and programming activities, including CNBC Europe and CNBC Asia Pacific; equity investments in the Arts & Entertainment Network, the History Channel, and ValueVision, Inc. (ShopNBC); and a non-voting interest in Paxson Communications Corporation.

Setting industry standards in technology and programming since its inception, NBC is a network of "firsts": the first permanent broadcasting network in the nation; the first U.S. coast-to-coast radio broadcast (the 1927 Rose Bowl); the first license for a commercial television station, now WNBC, in 1941; the first to offer an early-morning news program, in 1952; the revolutionary first color telecast, in 1953; the first made-for-television movie, in 1964; the first to broadcast in stereo, in 1984; and the first major television network to launch a full-scale Web offering, NBC.com, in 1995."
